1.2.1 (correct me if I'm wrong) onwards required Steam, there have been a couple of updates for HL since then. Liken it to trying to play a newly released game on Windows 98, it's not guaranteed to work by any means. Half Life isn't too expensive (although I suppose it depends on where you're from), and if you own a legal copy, you should be able to register it with Steam.

Because esf is intended mostly for online play.. hl is only around 10 dollars. Not that expensive.
