just random sketches and stuff, realised i got way too detailed on the eyes, too early on, so i just went with blocking out shadows after that.

you did everything a little early on ;o.

i would recommend getting the basic shape of the head down first then go from there.

Nice shading though, very good job. Need more hard lines on things like jawlines, shading doesn't cut it for them ;)

If your doing it with pencil...don't smear the shading..it ends up messy...the outlines are lost..and looks very blurry
Drawings seem pretty good though..a bit of a cartoon feel in it but it looks ok

Smudging is a perfectly legitimate tool for evening out a shading job, you actually should use it with limits to how much you do. Garaud shading is a perfect example of where smudging shines.
