So anyways, getting the results of my fathers P.E.T Scan back today, shows no new signs of cancer, total remission they've said, great news indeed.

Thing is, the doctor comes in:

Doctor: How are you doing?

Father: I'm doing good, getting better every day, feeling fine.

Doctor: You're not lying to me are you?

Father: Uh, no, I feel pretty good today.

Doctor: *lets out a sigh* sits down, breaks his smile and looks at my Father.

Father: ...*clearly alarmed*

Doctor: Results show no new signs of cancer, total remission, congratulations, ectera, ectera, it can still come back, it's your life, live it, the usual.


But man, did he have to sigh, sit down, ask if my father was lying about if he felt well, stop smiling and do that?

My dad commented later to me he nearly thought he was going to say "You're finished"

Ah man, good news, but that Doctor, he was surely messing with us.

He reminds me of the Doctor from Family Guy who beats around the bush.

Then Regis comes in and says you've won the million dollars.

Depending on when your father took that test, the doctor could very well have been in his right to ask that, considering the sneaky nature of cancer. Also, did it ever occur to you that the doctor sighed in relief, and that breaking your smile is natural to do in such a situation?

I'd argue it's more to do with the fact that your average doctor isn't so good with the bedside manner bit. Inter-personally, most of them are fine, but seem to be very data oriented when it comes t their work.

I would have to say that Doctors like telling people they have cancer as much as the patient finding out they have cancer.

It's nice to hear your father's doing well. I agree with Karrde, it was probably a little slip in bedside manners or a poor attempt at humour. Mash anyone?

Doctor's notes on the patient:

"The cancer is in complete remission, which is great news - the bad news is that the patient seems to suffer from humourensis terribilis, a condition from which they may never truly recover. Will prescribe regular doses of Monty Python, Black Adder, Red Dwarf, and Black Books."

How old is your father? 40, 50, 60?

I think the joke was that his cancer may be gone, but he still only has 20-30 years left. When humanity could go on for another 3.5 billion years.
