Do we? Why do we?

Is it a necessity, a human need, or just another luxury.

Does it contribute to others or just to the artist?

What do you consider a good art? Does art got to have a message?

What do you think about abstract art? Is it bull****? does it reflect the artist's emotions?

Talk freely, discuss, share opinions, and keep a peace of mind regarding others comments, add questions that are related to the subject that aren't in this post.

Chakra-x englihtened me: I mean all types of art, from Theather to using feces as dying colors to music.

Without art, your entire life would be boring.

I don't know if you are specifically talking about fine art, like paintings and sculpture and what not. Do you also include music and books? Those are forms of art as well.

Pictures are stronger than words. They can make people feel a way the artist wants to (sometimes the opposite of what they want to). If you ever saw a movie that made you cry, an artist chose certain angles, dialog, and direction to make you cry.

Your house would be a blob. An architect designed your house. Hell the combination of architects, industrial/graphic designers, and dozens of other professions designed your entire city, the cars in it, the planes that fly above it, your computer, your iPod, your favorite TV shows/movies.

^^^ all that would be gone with out artists :D

Art is absolutely necessary because it is a basic trait of humans. We've been doing it before we could create a writing system.

True. Art is part of us. We definitely need it.

The question is too vauge; art itself isn't necessary to keep us alive in any way shape or form. It's merely a way to pass to time; since technically all we need to keep us alive is food and water.

We do not need it to survive, but we need it to progress.

Some use art to express emotions as well to improve science. (davinci for example)
Some others used it to describe history, and history is essencial to human development.

That makes art essencial in every ways.

And even the earliest forms of writing can now be found in art museums around the world.

Art is a more complex way for a human being to express his or her emotions. Without it, we'd be much poorer creatures than we are now. Art, in any shape or form, is the most beautiful thing that's ever happened to this world, at least in my opinion.

Art is a human's need to create, instead of to just be created. So yes, for creatures as advanced as we are, art IS a necessity. If it weren't, we'd still be on primate level. And even they had art, just in a more primitive form (cave paintings and primitive music, consisting only of percussion in the beginning).
