Personally I don't believe in a "destiny" or that anything is inevitable, but could our lives be lead by a thread?

Benjamin Franklin said:
Certainty? In this world nothing is certain but death and taxes.
At least according to a quick google search it's a quote from good ol' benjie

if destiny, and fate, are predetermined, then free will is false, and god is a lie.

Wouldn't destiny and fate be predetermined by god. Thus proving his existence.

Lee has a point. If there's a "divine destiny", God is a fraud and we have no free will. God's will is that people have free will, not that people follow his will (although he'd obviously rather keep people from slaughtering each other, and so made some basic, simple rules for people to follow).

Unless, of course, destiny exists but the choices we make decide whether or not we ever achieve whatever it is we are meant to achieve. In this scenario, both free will and destiny exist. Then again, one can argue that we never really know if the choices we make are really our choices, and not parts of an overall plan. But destiny may actually take all of our choices made by our free will into consideration, and may change or adapt based on our choices. But the fact that destiny adapts or changes based on the choices we make still means that there's a template that we can't escape.

And I can go on and on and on and on.

If our destiny changes according to our choices, then it's not destiny in the classical sense.
Because then we would determine our destiny ourselves, which sounds like free will to me :D

Not exactly. You would start out with a predefined destiny, but how you arrive at your destination is completely up to you. There might also be a predefined path that one is supposed to follow, but if you make wildly different choices, destiny would accommodate you. However, the end result remains the same. Just because you chose to go left instead of right doesn't mean you're not going to end up at your destination anyway.

The problem is, if your destiny is predefined rather than the end result of all of your choices, then do you really have free will or the illusion of free will? You're going where you were supposed to go regardless of how you got there.

isn't that the Oedipus paradox? where his father was told of his doom, that his son would end his life, marry his own mother, and bring doom upon the land etc.

the king did everything in his power, exercising his free will, to stop it from happening, but in the end it was his own "choices" that led to his doom at the hands of his son.

ergo, his destiny was predetermined, and while he believed he made every logical choice to avoid it, against all reason, his choices led to the occurance. so his free will was merely an illusion anyway.

one can't change the direction of their fate, if there is indeed such a thing.
