This was interesting news indeed and surprised nobody wrote about it yet. Anyways sometime Saturday went to log into demonoid and got this error

"We received a letter from a lawyer represeting the CRIA, they were threatening with legal action and We need to start blocking Canadian traffic because of this. If you reside in Canada, that is the reason you are being redirected to this message. Thanks for your understanding, and sorry for any inconvenience."

Kind of funny they only blocked Canadian users and not the US or any other country. Guess the hammer is coming down on some of us Canadians so watch what you are doing for someone maybe watching you!

It's only to the website itself, if you can manage to grab a torrent off elsewhere, you'll still be able to access the tracker.

You still need to be logged in though or else they block you from accessing that torrent.

I think they are doing this because they cant sue anyone in Canada for downloading so they are just blocking Canada completely out of the loop.

Use a proxy.

They didn't block the tracker.

Cheers.

There's always anonymous proxies.

I'd be surprised if that works for downloading the torrents themselves.

They only blocked access to the website, not the tracker.

I hadn't even heard of the CRIA.

There are plenty of other sites out there, so I'm not exactly concerned.

Demonoid sucks. Its tracker keeps getting blocked sometimes, atleast around here.

Pfft, people are still using torrents? Damn, talk about the stone age revisited. Although, I do feel slightly nostalgic when I accidentally stumble across a torrent sight when browsing for lesbian action. Mmm... lesbians...

What should people be using rather than torrents?

Well, assuming you're not broke as ****, I recommend using Usenet. Binaries are untraceable, as there are no logs and you can't directly monitor who is accessing them. On the down side, you have to be somewhat of an advanced user to know how to assemble them. Though some binary managers allow for automatic decoding upon download completion.

Plus, nobody is going to jump through all of the extra hoops to bust you using Usenet (assuming there are any, but at this point I'm convinced there are no weaknesses in it), when you could easily be downloading said software for backup purposes. Nobody is going to nail you for downloading software, because when you get to court, all you have to do is wave your copy of the game/movie/cd around in the judge's face and laugh (assuming you were landed in court for downloading backup software). That's why P2P **** (Kazaa, Limewire, BitTorrent, etc.) is such a major target right now. Nobody is going to waste their time busting you for downloading something that you could already own. Instead, they bust you for distributing it to others. That's where BitTorrent's primary weakness is. You have to upload in order to download (at least at a decent speed).

I think I've more than made my point. In this age, P2P is dying. Usenet is cheap and keeps you much safer, and has a far more active community which takes care of it's own. Everything, and I mean everything you download from binary groups was requested by another user.

P2P = Free unlimited downloads

Usenet = Pay monthly for bandwidth

Hmmm...such a hard decision.

P2P = possible quarter million dollar fine if caught.

Usenet = Guarenteed safety (I've never once heard of a lawsuit against any Usenet service provider or user, and believe me I've thoroughly searched) and everything you could ever want for an incredibly small price.

You're right, the decision is impossible.

I don't have a consistent income.

The way I see it, getting caught downloading copyrighted files is similar to the rareness of getting struck by lighting. For some reason I know that statement is false. I do believe that LimeWire and Kazaa are pretty lame softwares. I hate when people turn to LimeWire to download copyrighted files.

I just don't see myself getting caught downloading a torrent, even though it's not safe.

I think programs like eMule or DC++ are more safer freeware.

Right now, I'm not aware of anyway to search through these websites to look for files you need.

There was some Google hack, but it was convenient enough for me to use it.

If you know what you are looking for you can pretty much just type the name of it followed by rapidshare in google and you will get a list of sites with the RS links or MU links, like say "porn rapidshare"
