My DBZ Flash Game

Ive been fiddling around in Flash and thought Id recreate a DBZ ki wave using particle effects, and after some experimenting I decided to make a fun DBZ arcade game.

Ki Taiketsu (Spirit Showdown)
Size : 3 Mb


A 2D ESF of sorts, almost like a Pong with free movement, afterimages, melee, and ki waves.



Now I admit its not perfect, and it lacks some final gloss, but its only for fun.

What are your highscores?

A cookie to whoever figures out the cheat codes.

Any ideas/suggestions to implement are welcome.

The flash will say "Press Any Key to Continue" when it has loaded.
You can either press any key, or click the screen.
The thing is, because the flash is embedded, it doesnt have focus until you click on it. So you have to click on the flash before it reads your keyboard input, so yeah atm the "Press Any Key to Continue" is redundant. I neglected to forsee this til I uploaded it :p

I just played it, and I find the game play quite interesting. Though the controls are very hard. Mind setting up movements with the WSAD keys?

Oh wow! That was really fun, and damn man, I'm impressed. Really fast paced action, sounds work perfectly, very unique gameplay too. And very difficult! Sky is right about the controls, it gets confusing trying to hit CNTRL and SHIFT while moving about. It'd make more sense with WASD, and replacing CNTRL with Q and SHIFT with E, that way both fingers can reach to their individual buttons, rather than stretching your pinky finger.

I wouldve used WASD, but when you press ctrl in combination with these keys, flash does funky stuff with its inbuilt shortcut keys. I didnt know how it would react as embedded flash, plus it made it easier to test at runtime to avoid these keys..I also went through a lot of different control phases as my particle experiments evolved.

Also one thing ive learnt making flash is that people always get annoyed when I make qwerty layouts and not azerty ones, or whine that i should use arrow keys lol. You rarely need to press shift unless you detonate the beam, which doesnt cause damage, just kills the beam.

Also, there are 3 cheats that can be activated : HP Regen, Inf Ki, Inf HP. Cheat codes are words, no numbers, no sentences. If you get a good score take a screeny, but Ill know if you used cheats or tried to edit the screeny :p



Ok what Ill do is :

movement = WASD
Primary = LMB
Secondary = SHIFT
Special = E

Give me a few minutes and Ill have this changed and re uploaded!

Controls are now as follows :

WASD ----> Movement
LMB ------> Primary Action
SHIFT ----> Secondary Action
E ---------> Special Action
Q ---------> Quit to Main Menu
Z ---------> Toggle AI Movement
(Practice Mode only)
X ---------> Toggle AI Combat (Practice Mode only)

Apparently I got 94K at some point, but I don't remember that. Still, that attempt was 32K, using the ingenuis tactic of standing in front of Vegeta playing pong until the energy blast was 5x the size of either of us and letting it slap him in the face.

Nicely done! Reminds me of a more freeform style of "Supersonic Warriors". I admit when I saw the thread, I did not expect much, but your proved me wrong.

edit: If you made this, you should polish it and submit it to www.newgrounds.com. There are lot of DBZ stuff around there, and if your game is voted as one of the top 5 highest games of the month, you'll win $250

Cheers guys! Andd yes I am a Newgrounder! I thought about submitting to the Portal, but I wasnt sure it was only me who found it fun :p


Remember guys your score adds up as you progress through the levels! Plus you get an overall bonus when you eventually die. The only limit on how many levels there are depends on the playability of the AI's difficulty curve, which Im yet to see the limit....

Im not such a fan of Z Ball these days, mostly cos Ive learnt a lot since and I suck at playing it now :p

I made KiTaiketsu whilst procrastinating from doing the AI for my Fight! engine

I cant believe noones gotten some uber level or figured the cheatcodes yet o_O

Ill make it easy - codes are characters names which correlate with the effect.

What level was that Jakut?

What are people finding most difficult to progess through levels?

Also do people realise you can teleport?

Press Shift while moving to teleport with your momentum.

Press Shift while still to Instantaneous Movement to the mouse.

Press Shift when you hurt the enemy and you will tele behind him, then you can chainhit him with melee. The point of the game is to trap the enemy in this assault.

Quickly charge and release a small ki ball and try to link combos together.

Perhaps after every 3-5 hits, I should replenish some Ki ???

Ill experiment with some powerups and ki reward and make another update soon.

This game fails for azerty users, as "A" = "Q" for azerty (see the problem there? :p), so if I don't want to break my fingers trying to reach the movement keys, I keep hitting Q.
