I've been experiencing this problem for some time now, and I've tried everything to fix or at least limit the amount of disconnections I get. Either browsing the internet or playing a game online, I continously get disconnected.

These are the things I've tried to improve my connection:

  • Removed the reserve bandwidth that Windows XP has set.
  • Unplug the router for an hour and plug it back in again (to get a new IP address).
  • Changed some registry keys.
  • Upgrade my DSL to 3Mb

The router is a Linksys and the modem (According to what it says on the front) is a SpeedStream.
Do you have model names for both of them?.

The model numbers? Sure:

Linksys: BEFSX41

SpeedStream 5260 (could only find the part number): 060-5660-004

How often does your net drop out (approx time?).

I can only give an estimate since it doesn't seem to happen at a constant interval - I'd say about maybe... ten-fifteen times a day, each lasting about twenty-thirty seconds.

Maker sure Idle dissconnect is not set in the router config and see what happens. If that still doesn't work, upgrade the firmware for your router and your modem.

I can upgrade the firm ware from any computer connected to it right?

Also I'm trying to look for the IP address to get into the router configuration, but where can I find the idle disconnect option when I get in there?

Edit

I can't get into the router, I tried the following:

http://192.168.2.1
http://192.168.1.1
http://192.168.1.5

It just came up to a "unable to load page" error.

By default, most routers have an IP address of \\192.168.0.1
Run cmd and type "ipconfig /all" without the quotation marks to take a look at your IP addresses and see what your router IP address is encase it's set to a different address.

Edit: This link in the drop down menu shows that there are 3 different variants of your router. Do you know which variant you are using?.

Yeah, I know which one.

I was able to get into the router, now where do I find that option...

Edit

Is this it?

Set Connect on demand: Max Idle time to 0.

What does this setting do anyway?
Connect on demand will only let you use the net when you need it, it's better not to have a value set to it but 0. This may explain for why your net drops out on you often.

Alright, so I keep the "Keep Alive" setting selected, but change the "Connect on Demand" value to 0.

It also looks like I really need to update my firmware since it says the version it has was made in 2003.

Edit

It would seem that updating the firmware for my router will only make the disconnects worse. I remember updating the firmware some time ago but it caused me to disconnect a lot so I had to revert back. I posted a thread in the Linksys forum asking about it and apparently the latest firmware does have that problem.

Also is it possible to get to my modem in the same way as I get to the router?
