Can someone recommend me the proper path to contribute to this ESF:F project?

I've got a working brain and ample free time to begin learning and experimenting on my own until I hopefully reach a level of expertise which could allow me to contribute something of value to this project. Can anyone steer me in the right direction in terms which programs the ESF:F team is using so that I could learn them and then contribute that which is needed?

3Ds max would be the first thing you would like to learn.

But does it matter which version of 3D Studio Max? Would a creation from an older version easily be transferred to whatever version they're using to actually implement the stuff in?

I still import models into Max 2013 from 2007. It works fine.

You should check out the ESF Main Page. Check the Jobs section.
