AMD is well on its way to releasing the chip it has dubbed the "Core 2 Duo killer", probably Q3-4 2007, and now has decided to reveal exactly how its K10 "Barcelona" chip plans to make that kill.

The first point AMD stress is that moving to the new K10 using Socket F will only need update the BIOS while both desktop and notebook Barcelona versions will be released.

Technically, Barcelona will be able to deliver 4 Floating Points per clock cycle and will feature an increased buffer while all four cores will carry 512 KB of L1 and an L2 cache and all cores will share the 2 MBs of the L3 cache. According to AMD's European technical director, Guiseppe Amato, the main advantage of the new microprocessor compared to Intel's design is AMD's memory connect design.

This information comes from AMD as Intel prepares the ground for its Developer Forum in Beijing next week. If AMD stick to their usual strategy expect more Barcelona information to be unveiled as the Intel event approaches.

LOL

We'll see when it comes out, but I wouldn't be surprised to see this new chip spank the Duo.

Since Intel's already Quad cores on the market

I d say next stop, Intel Quadcore duo = 8 cores

But it seems to me the hardware is going faster then software, if the software cant support multicores whats really the point? By the time software catches up, (unless theres a huge boom in software development which the hardware boom just may cause), we'll be upto like 40 cores while software can just support 4. Right now is just seems like cores race, and how many you can fit under that little metal plate.

AMD's got quads too you just need two dual core cpus on a single board

AMD is claiming that on same GHZ that Barcelona will be 20% faster. But rumours are they cant clock Barcelona over the 2,5 GHZ.

Besides that, this processor will first be launched on the server market and will take about 4 months(From what I heard) before it will enter as a consumer processor.

Intel already has planned a drop in the price for June. The Q6600 will be priced for $266.

Was that before or after the Penryn update?

Gurbir's right.

Whats the use of l33t hardware if your software cannot handle it. Linux doesnt work with dual cores or any multiple core pcs.... What the guys need to do is upgrade the software to use the hardware...

Dual Cores and quad cores can be used today, a single application may not be fully optimized to handle the threads, but if say... you run vista, have a virus scanner running, or an MP3 player, while playing a game, you will notice a lot less of a performance drop, compared to say a single core.
Windows NT (I think), Windows 2000, XP, Vista are all optimized for several cores, Nvidia and ATI have optimized they're drivers for several cores, even programs like Winamp support multi-cores.
And there is 1 game that comes to mind that is multi-threaded and thats Quake 3 Arena.
Also there is a beta patch released by id that supports dual-cores on Quake 4, and because the engine is basically an enhanced doom 3 engine, I don't see why doom 3 can't have dual core support.
