Socket 939 is currently the best, IMO. With AMDx2 support and all the other goodies without needing registered RAM DIMMs, who needs anything else? Incedentally, these aren't CPUs, but names for a specific PGA socket type.

The first two sockets are for intel chips. Sockets 754, 939 & 940 are all for AMD chips, 939 being mainstream for most setups. 754 is an older socket & 940 is for workstations and servers mainly (most 940 boards need registered memory though).

Next year AMD will be releasing Socket M2, 940pins (but don't get the idea that you can use s940 chips in them they won't work). Along with this new socket, chipsets based around these sockets will include support for ddr2.
