First of all, I'd like to say, What up to all my Aliens fizzans, for rizzle.
Now...I was reading some craptacular gamespy article and it had a listing of some UT2k4 mods. One of them is this odd...top down tactical shooter...called "Alien Swarm." Has anyone else ever heard of it?
It's got really weird controls and it's tricky as hell to get used to, but I find it to be pretty enjoyable because of just how insanely different it is from most other mods. As I mentioned, it's played from a top down view, and it is actually heavily inspired by Aliens.
The premise is simple. You control a team of marines in single player or multiplayer (yeah, that's right--it's single player). You're on a bug hunt--cleaning out a colony filled with various specimens of--what else?--a swarmof vicious insect-like alien creatures. Advertising isn't allowed here, so I'm not going to post the address unless a mod stops off and says it's okay (third warning = me out of the rumble = the SUCK). But check the screens, it's as weird as it looks:

Here's some of the things I've noticed about this odd game so far:
- They've obviously been heavily inspired by Aliens. The audio and ambience, especially. The marines you control have personalities and voices; audio cues make them drop very Aliens-esque commentary.
- The maps are gorgeous and highly detailed. Despite the seeming 2D nature, there is actually a lot of 3rd dimensional stuff happening. Aliens come in from EVERY angle.
- The lighting and ambience is awesome. It reeks of aliens, right down to the intense paranoia. When you open fire the marines start yelling and stuff and it becomes the frantic fragfest of Aliens' medbay fight all over again.
- The bugs themselves are pretty cool too. Your marines can get infested by this very fast thing called a parasite. If that happens, you have to either heal that marine repeatedly and immediately, or let him die...and spawn four or five MORE of the parasites! Because of this, if you get infested during a co-op game...the medic has to make a choice of whether you are worth saving or not. If he doesn't want to waste the med packs on you...then usually, they do exactly what they'd do in Aliens--kill you.
- The game ALWAYS has friendly fire on...so as to simulate the chaotic mess that the aliens-style firefights always had. During the training mission I killed both of my partners while frantically firing a flamethrower...and then as I was alone in the dark, I felt a bit of the old familiar aliens paranoia that I know and love.
- Last but not least, the coolest aspect of the game: YOU CAN WELD THE DOORS SHUT AND CUT THEM OPEN. :0D
