About my USB (needs help)

I have the 2 normal USB slots, and they work, and on the same panel, theres a headphone plug and a Microphone plug, but they don't work, can anyone tell me why this is? Oh yeah, and you know how CD Rom drives have the Headphone plug, well how comes when I have my headphones in it, they dont work?

yeh i got a USB head set to. all u have to do is go to the control panel and go into audion settings and customize for u to talk through ur headset and listen through ur speakers (not headset!) because for some reason it wont let u listen through the headset for me
