You mean, like, your energy attacks? Like a generic beam? Yeah, you can make them look (more or less) however you want by creating and/or downloading custom sprites.

Sprites are rendered additively.
So the color of each pixel in the sprite is added to the color of whats behind it.
Black being 0,0,0 adds nothing so is completely transparent.
