I was wondering what the function of the 'b' type sprites are in ESF?

For instance:

kamehamehaa.spr
kamehamehab.spr

kamehamehaastart.spr
kamehamehabstart.spr

masenkoa.spr
masenkob.spr

masenkoastart.spr
masenkobstart.spr

These attacks only have one mode of fire so why do they have two sets of sprites? There's only one trail and charge sprite for each attack.

I think a is for horizinal and b for vertical. Or vice versa ^^
