Forward ports 27000-27030 (UDP and TCP) to your machine and try again.

no different than before,
unless im forwarding ports wrong, im pretty sure that isnt the problem.

when i create a dedicated server, even in internet mode its IP appears to be one of a local server, (192.blah blah)

im pretty sure the ports are correct, looking at several examples via google.
sv_lan is set to 0, (but it keeps kicking it back to 1 when i create a game)

i noticed on one google search that when creating a game in CS:S there was an option to pick which network you were creating the game on, LAN or Internet.
this option is absent from my HLDM it appears, perhaps you cannot create a HLDM server this way? (im really starting to wonder)

Change sv_lan to 0 in your server.cfg file in the ESF directory. That way when you start the game, it'll already be set to 0.

HLDM is the only game we currently both own on steam, he has not purchased HL1 yet.

that purchase is riding on whether or not i can figure out why this isnt working.

what bugs me is that im doing what every page i can find says to do, i set sv_lan at 0, i type net_start, i even type heartbeat.
i have forwarded the ports, tried disabling my firewall too. and yet the damned thing will not create a internet game >_>,
I have a feeling im missing something very obvious.

lets say i just wanted to be able to send him an IP of my server, and not worry about if its in the list or not.
( i read someone else here could do that), how would i go about doing that?

net_start
heartbeat
etc,

and someone joined =O, now if i can just decipher what exactly i did correctly i got this in the bag
