To render, after hitting F10, just go to the tab box under common parameters and click on Render Output - File. This will designate the file name of the rendered file and the format it will be in.

There are also several other options that there that will change the quality of the render, like it's resolution, but you can probably leave them as they are and experiment with them when have time.

After selecting an output, just click on render at the bottom of the window.
---------------
To select a shape that you create, simply click on it and then right click on the screen and select "Move"
For further editing of the object, right click on the screen, go down to "convert to" then click on "Editable Mesh"

For the zoom tool, when you have the magnifying glass selected, you make sure you don't click on the left mouse button, because that will deactivate it.

Maybe some of these tutorials will help speed the learning process?

http://www.3dtotal.com/ffa/tutorials/max/robot tut/owntut1.asp (For getting aquainted with the controls)

http://www.3dtotal.com/ffa/tutorials/max/joanofarc/joanmenu.asp (This pretty much goes through all the systems of max. I did this tutorial when I used gmax, so it doesn't really matter what version you have.

http://www.3dtotal.com/team/Tutorials/benmathis/benmathis_1.asp (Not much technical explanation, but it does illustrate a different modelling technique in max)

Hope this helps some ^_^

For moving objects, right click and click move. The xyz axis...s should come up click on one of them to drag in that direction.
Dont use the magnifying glass... just select it ALL and right click... then go to scale
remember to press the center and not the sides

Save then as 24 bit :p thats all i have to say... I dont use my 3dsm anymore o_O... hardly anyways :'(
