When I downloaded the game it lowers with the HL2 or 1 ..

What do you mean?

If you download and install hl2 it will be a separate game from hl1

you can still play either one.

ESF is a mod for Hl1, hl2 is a totally separate game

It will show in your steam library like this:

Half-life
Half-life 2

It will NOT overwrite the game

ESF = HL1

You don't need HL2 which is a separate game from HL1.

I have no idea what hes talking about when saying lowers. My impression is that he meant requires.

Either way despite what he said, I think what the answer boils down to is the only thing that you need to play ESF is an installed version of HL1.
