For the past few weeks Ryokeen has been hard at work adding and optimizing shaders for ESF. One of the latest additions is a wave generator. The new shader gives ESF environment artists the option to add ocean like water to maps.

During initial tests the ocean shader has shown a performance increase over the older "flat" water shader. The system uses a grid of approximately 50K polygons to generate the waves. This can be reduced to meet the performance requirements of lower-end machines. Also, the system implements a level of detail system that increases the amount of detail a player sees the closer they get to the water.

I still can't get over how far you all have come with this mod. The mere fact that it's on original Half-Life's engine just proves how much skill you all have developed over the years. Keep up the good work. I've been a long time esf fan. Since the Alpha days. So seeing this progress just makes me want to scratch that "I WANT TO PLAY THE NEW ESF" itch. If given the opportunity I would pay a substantial amount of money to you guys just due to the fact that I wouldn't feel right getting this full blown game for freezies upon release. You all would deserve it. That's for damn sure.

This looks nice indeed but what mickyg said is kinda making me wonder if you guys are doing
water with physics or just sprites? i mean rising water is hard to do with sprites i guess.

a bit more and there could be a comparison screenie between esf and crysis water >=)

Sprites. Water physics on the scale of an ocean as its used in ESF would pretty much kill any GPU.

The waves are still fully 3D though.
