Can I use Half-Life Counter-Strike to work ESF off or do i have 2 buy half-life the original. Please help me.

im having a problem, when I click on multiplayer for ESF it tells me I need to update but when i click ok it closes the game and tells me to start the update then when I do that it says verifying internet connection then it cant find any.
