Newell: "delaying the game to 2005"

all i no is, half life 2 will rock, just wait for it to be released
hackers always have to rune thinks for the majority of ppl
theres no point gettin sumthing if its not finished
u finish the what u got and u want more, but u delay the rest cos u got greedy
its like gettin half an ice-cream (or just the cone)

[QUOTE=SSFT]
yeah, they said maby, and if. BUT what is the origional site? I read it on planet half-life.

(btw, 120 secs flood control really is too long… especially since it restarts everytime you jump the gun)

When it was smaller, or off for that matter, the forum recieved prodigal amounts of spam. This keeps people from flooding the board.

does this delay mean that hl2 will take advantage of athlon 64 processors ?

Read my lips:

HL2 will make gaming history.

Major “selling points” of the Half Life 2, like realistics shadows, ragdoll physics, lip-synching, “smart” combat AI, and supposedly unscripted sequences, have already been realized in other games (first one that comes to mind is Deus Ex 2).

I’m surprised at the number of people willing to make models, maps, sounds effects, etc. for an engine that isn’t officially out. They’re all riding on the hope that the Half Life 2 fan-base will be as large as Half Life’s was. I seriously don’t think it will be as large.

From what I’ve seen (screenshots and the E3 demo), the Half Life 2 engine can’t really compare with other games in development, especially with level of detail on characters. The most notable competitor being Doom 3, which is a John Carmack engine, so you know it’s going to be absolutely disgusting. (If you don’t know who John Carmack is, I suggest you uninstall anything that uses a Quake engine right now, including Half Life)

I personally will not buy Half Life 2, because I do not want to support Valve. I mean, we’re still awaiting Team Fortress 2, which was supposed to be out in 1999 and hasn’t officially been cancelled.

Now, I’ve got my mind on other good-looking games in development, like Thief 3: Deadly Shadows, S.T.A.L.K.E.R., and Söldner (mercenary). !_!

HL2 will not hit my top 100 games to buy , it may have good graphics but it mite have crap game play , a game either has Good GFX or Gameplay , not one game comes to mind that has both good GFX and gameplay , so HL2 will not be a wow factor to me

Heh, I still think it’s going to be a great game, becuase HL1 was a great success. IT was a game that had good graphics, good mobility, which was comfortable and smooth, and just a lot of fun. It also had a lot of great multiplayer capabilities. I’d say the MP aspect was better than quakes. The plot wasn’t special, It was decent, about as good as any other shooter’s storyline.
I really hate that it’s being pushed back, and it’s only going to take away from the games freshness, and originality (if anything can be original these days). Halo looked like it was going to kick ass, but it got delayed for the PC for so long, that by the time it came out, it was just another shooter, nothing special. I really hope that the same thing doesn’t happen to HL2.

sigh

First of all, why do people act as if the game has been delayed 1000 times? There has only been 1 delay so far… and that was in September 2003. The next “date” that officially came from Valve was Summer 2004. And they haven’t announced any other delays yet. And that thing about “delaying it to 2005” is nothing to be worried about, and I think it’s an old quote anyway. They simply said that IF the game needs more time to be completed, they’d push the release date back immediately.

And about the code leak: big deal. Everyone makes mistakes, I’m sure Valve won’t make the mistake again of connecting the source code PC to the internet.

I bought the radeon 9600XT and still got a coupon for hl2, frikking ati guys are in the plot i tell u… hl2 was fake from te beginning, just to boost the sale of ati cards having the hl2 coupon in it. :stuck_out_tongue:
just kidding tho

PC gamer and PC ZONE the best two pc gamiong mag in the uk say it’s comming out in july as what most mods say here about 1.2 coming out "IT’s done when its done"all i can say is WAIT AND SEE

nabashi, did you read through this topic? it isnt even about 1.2 it is about HALF-LIFE 2

Farcry? Splinter Cell? Halo? Almost all the FF series? etc etc. Tons of games with both graphics and gameplay. Even the original HL has excellent graphics for its time on top of some of the best gameplay in history. To judge a game jsut because it has good graphics somehow seems like flawed logic to me.

If a dev team for a MOD (COUNTERSTRIKE!) has more skill and speed than a dev team for a GAME, we’re not talking about a good dev team.

I think he’s just saying that, just like with ESF, you should just WAIT for HL2 to come out, instead of nagging on and on about it.

Exatly what i was meaning

It’s sad to see that some people actually think that Valve owes them Half Life 2. As if Valve is for some reason obligated to release the game as fast as possible because nothing else matters except the customers. That’s completly false. If Valve wants to delay it because they think it needs to be then so be it, who cares, wait for games that are coming out soon, like Doom3 or Duke Nukem Forever.

I couldnt agree with you more. LoL though i dont forsee Doom 3 comin out soon.

Somebody in here compared HL2 to Doom 3 and Duke Nukem Forever.

Doom 3 was set for release in March. It was an awesome trick–they then pulled it back, after everyone had preordered it, so that the preorders were in and strategically they scared the crap out of competitors. I mean…Doom has an excuse–they have like, one to two guys building the whole thing (engine) from the ground up. Once the engine was created, I bet Doom 3’s actual development time is much less than Half Life’s. This we know because of the following:

Newell has publically said that they’ve worked on Half-Life 2 since they finished Half-Life in the first place. Doom III, at best, was started two years ago. If what Newell said was true, than that means that the game has been in development for something like five years! I mean…not for nothing, but they released like 40 million videos of the game already. I’ve already seen every cinema and graphics technique they’ll probably use in those scenes. And for what it’s worth, it seems damned close to being done in those vids.

The thing is, Valve had agreement with nvidia, I think. And when it was discovered that Nvidia cards can barely use any of HL2’s DX9 features with acceptable performance (they actually said they had to revert to DX8.1 to even try and test it)…well, that’s a pretty big oopsie in your engine. Let’s hope it’s the engine, becauise if its things in the maps, the modelling, etc…then that means they’ll have to completely redo it all, won’t it?

Blah. I was really looking forward to it but they’ve jerked us around too much. Doom ain’t so bad, they haven’t spammed full spread ads in magazines, they haven’t had any 3-page foldouts in PC Gamer lately, and they most importantly haven’t spammed us with ingame video. So Doom is in better shape right now, if you ask me. I think this is why we’re all not minding that Half-Life is so massively late…because they spammed it so much.

Like my last girlfriend. A ****tease. hehe.

Either way though…I’m pretty sure Gabe meant that comment hypothetically. Speaking as someone with experience in marketing, though…I bet his PR department kicked him in the junk when he got back from that press release. lol

not one game comes to mind that has both good GFX and gameplay

oh please…I love Baldur’s gates graphics, I love Fallouts graphics…
And their gameplay.. Well I wont even mention that.
But seeing as this is about 3d-shooters, try Farcry, you won’t be dissapointed

ps : The “hacker” hasn’t been proven yet, for all we know it’s just a really lame excuse to delay it, I personally don’t care when Half-life 2 comes out, or if it ever will come out, I’d much rather see Fallout 3 :frowning: but that’s just an opinion,

I tried Farcry and was very disappointed. But that’s besides the point.

The hacker thing was all over news all over the world…and it was announced by them. Why the hell would they make up an excuse for it? No other company in the history of PC gaming has ever just made up an excuse, especially one that lame.

Thats my whole logic on it–it’s so stupid, it’s too stupid to be something made up.

Besides…half-compiled versions of the game are floating around already from that stolen code.
