Ya, so I was just thinking that maybe ESF1.3 could use an SVN (wiki)?

This would help on updating versions and such,
tho I'm not sure how much stress it would cause on the dev team.
It would also make the downloaders job "easier".

Anyways think about it..

You got a server for this? SVN would rape the bandwidth :).

Well, there are a few free SVN servers.
For example Sourceforge (link) offers a SVN server,
and on the Subversion homepage there are more links to SVN hosts (link (scroll down for "Sites that Offer Subversion Hosting")).

svn or cvs hosts are typically only free for opensource projects. But if you can find one that is for closed source as well and offers >300MB of space, I'd be interested.

Well I looked at some of the sites listed on the Subversion site and:

Gna! (link) provides hosting for closed source projects,
however they must fall under GNU (must be a free program and something, I'm not too familiar with the GNU license)
and has a negotiable amount of space (all registrations are manually checked).

Also Assembla (link) provides free account with 500MB of space (click the "Take a tour" to see the details).

Sorry for doubleposting, however I seem to ha found quite the perfect place:

OpenSVN @ csie.org
https://opensvn.csie.org/

On that SVN there is no limit to your project as seen here on the FAQ:
http://wiki.ptt.cc/-OpenSVNFAQ

You are only asked to report to the admin if one or more of the following conditions is true:
- You need over 2GB of space (ESF only needs 300MB)
- You need over 1 million hits per day (ESF only need.. few hundred?)
- You need over 10Mbps tranfer rate (I think you'll do fine with just 10Mbps)

So you can just create a account for ESF, upload the initial stuff and be on your way to victory!

Quite frankly said SVN is a lot harder to set up by the user than simply downloading a RAR file and extracting it.

Even if SVN is better with updating seting it up may be problematic for some people. Lets face it people had enough problems just using WinRAR with SVN itll get worse.

Well I'm not sure SVN is that hard for people to use.

First just install TortoiseSVN (link),
then create a folder to commit to (eg. steam/half-life/esf),
right-click the folder and choose SVN Commit and give the SVN address,
watch the commit.. and you're done.

And then when you want to update just go right-click the folder and choose SVN Update.

Yea and with Winrar you only have to rightclick with the mouse and select extract to. Then select the HL foulder.

Yet people still managed to ask how to install without an installer when we stated a lot of times that you need to extract with winrar.

Well ill leave it up to harsens and masta to decide ^^

I'm currently playing around with assembla, which seem to have ok transfer rates. GNa! is only for open source software. The open svn thingie shows on the main page:
Due to errors in our backup scripts, we have gone two weeks without backups of the repositories. Unfortunately, we made an error when cleaning our filesystems. As a result, some repositories have been deleted. Some of them have been recovered from our last backup, which we regret is two weeks old. If you can't access your repository, mostly likely it is lost. We sincerely apologize for any loss of data and inconvenience.
Doesn't sound too reliable to me... It's run by a couple of students, which makes me doubt their continuity and reliability even more.

If we will be distributing on svn, we will still keep the distribution as downloadable installer or .zip file.
