I was about to tell you guys about it but are you guys going to make a GIF background for the menu? Like the water flow and a Namek background, sun shine, trees, house and stuff?

I just want it to look a little bit more interesting.

Not possible on STEAM.

The old WON system had a posibility of a video being played in the BG (if people still remember the ESF sign with lightning on it), but the port to STEAM pretty much removed that

Well, there is a game that play a CGI trailer when you started the game and was played before the game menu was brought up , it had generated physical movements in the video, but then again it wasn't a "animated gif". The game was named "The Specialist". Buuuut I can't find the video that provides that evidence.

Again WON supported that. For some reason when they ported HL over to STEAM they completely broke that system.

And The Specialists is older than STEAM BTW.

Dont know if they still have that. And since i didnt like the game i dont have it to check.

The Specialist came out in 2002 on october 5th, really late into 2002, and steam was released 2003 , but they still had that intro to the game.

STEAM was released in 2003, but until WON was officially cut off people continued to play WON, because STEAM was buggy as all hell. And that was 2004/2005 ish

I don't recall TS ever having an intro.

the thing is the game menu is always accessible in steam games now, having a moving background takes up more resources, that is why they don't allow it.

I was searching for this type of thread because I wanted to suggest you do the same thing as Black Mesa did. Now I don't know exactly what they technically produced, but they have moving background in the menu that looks like it comes from inside the game!

EDIT: Furthermore, they kinda load the background that was relevant to your progression in the game. Hinting that multiple backgrounds could be loaded to the menu of ESF. However, this is on source, so I guess I answered my question :/

Black mesa is a hl2 mod. The moving/progress related bg is a HL2 feature

Think about it ... You would already stuck in the menu watching the scenery ... Better make the menu neutral so you can get in game :fight:

Well seeing as they hacked the shit out of HL1...how difficult would it be to do that for ESF? Just curious if it's possible/feasible.

No.
Or maybe instead of animated backgrounds, they just supplied a large slideshow of backgrounds, either cycling through slowly, or randomly chosen at the start up phase?

That would be the best choice, I think...

That would be the worst choice! Either we have static imagery (potentially randomised at startup) or we have moving imagery based on how Black Mesa is doing their shit or some other type of embedded in-game video.

I think making the background image customizable would be cool with different images of each ESF level. I only know of two different background images from the inteam version; Ice Wasteland and a picture of Namek. Don't do anything that's gonna be a hassle, I'd rather ya'll focus on primary things that'll help with release than menial tasks.

I won't lie though this is a really good idea, whether it's implementable (just made this word up I think) or not...

Or better yet, use some of the POTWs as background images! :D

Cry of Fear is a HL1 mod that has a 2d and 3d menu with an animated background. It should be more than possible. Something as simple as the camera panning through one of the levels with the sun rising and setting would be very cool ^,,^
