how do i use scattering beam

i shoot a scattering beam at some1 and it doesnt go and hit another person though??? how do i work this

It scatters.

Load up the beam.. preferable max.. then fire... the closer it is to any target the better it homes. (yet I got alot of kills by firing at the middle and the beam homes to a target far right (or left))

So basicly... load your shot... aim (A bit) and fire. If more enemies are present and the beam has a slight chance of getting near it splits.
