make sure you legally have Half-Life, meaning you BOUGHT IT.
make sure half-life is updated to version 1.1.1.0
also make sure your video mode is NOT on software mode, open esf go to Configurations, Video, Video modes, and switch it to OpenGL or Direct 3d

If yuo are using CS retail, also make sure you legally have it, and then make sure ESF is in the CS folder, then make sure CS is updated to version 1.5
