Is it a web page that pops up? Or is it like a window that pops up, often a good example would be the one that offers Diplomas.

If its that search "Pop up diplomas" in google and you can find a site that tells you how to disable it.

Or www.lavasoftusa.com has something called Ad-aware, which removed self-installed programs, I highly recommend it.

Its most likely messaging him through windows... I didn't know there was a way to disable it but if you want it to stop just go and switch your ip. Either renew it, unplug and plug back in your cable modem or whatever you have to do.

Wait do you mean "net messenger" popups with like ads for ****?

You can disable that like so:

Control panel: Administrative tools
Services >
scroll down to Messenger

properties

do startup type: disabled

and then click STOP for the service status

Hope this helps someone

God damn kids and their dad's compaqs...

Windows Messenger can be disabled as Gman said. First thing advanced users do when they sit down to "fix" a bud's XP machine.

Secondly...internet popups are entirely your own fault. be more careful where you go and learn how to prevent popups froms tarting, instead of burning processor power with some lame script that auto-closes them. Clear your cookies, tempf iles, and learn to use IE6's special feature where only certain websites' cookies are acccepted (Gamespy, Fileplanet, ESF, Livejournal for me).

Thirdly: stop downloading porn from unsafe sources. If you HAVE to get it, get it from a forum where people post links, those tend to be safer.

Fourth, "I didn't dl any porno dude mad popups wat do i do"...don't even argue. You've got it, and if it's not that, it's something else you aren't supposed to have; that is the bait for stupid advertising popups.

Fifth: tell your dad to also stop downloading porn (<---BIGGEST KILLER OF COMPUTERS I have EVER SEEN).

Sixth: Uninstall AOL, Kazaa, Bonzi Buddy, Morpheus, Download Accelerators, Download Managers, 56K speed enhancers...and all your cs hacks.

And I'm spent.

Another way to do what Gman said:

Go to Start > Run: type in "msconfig" (without "") and press enter.

Now note: -DO NO- MESS WITH ANY OTHER STUFF IN THIS WINDOW, you can ruin your startup because of this.

Go to the StartUp tab, and uncheck the msn messenger excecutable from the list. If it's not there, that means it's already disabled and MSN won't start automatically when you turn on your pc.

A note: msconfig does not work in win2k. If MSN instant messenger in winxp opens up a hole for those messages. A firewall will not stop them from coming. I don't know if the disabling of msn will stop it but even if it does then what if someone wants to use msn? And yes I know about trillian, I have used it for years.

OK, i'd suggest that you first go to www.ad-aware.com and download and run that. That should zap all of your spy-ware or atleast all of the active stuff. First time i ran it i think i had about over 300 of them running. Not only do they cause mad pop-ups but they also eat up memory and bandwidth. Dissabling the messanger is a good idea too as they get annoying because they usually attack you in large groups all at once. Also if you have bad lag when you should not and your computer seems to be running alot slower than it should i'll bet that you have the "I love you" virus. For someone reason very few of the anti-virus programs will catch it and it eats up resources like crazy. If you like downloading alot of stuff i would suggest that you use a second hardrive with a second OS on it for all your games.

For the record, that MSN Messenger disable advice doesn't stop jack. The messenger we speak of is a different one.

And Kazaa is about as good for gamers as AOL is for functionality.

Yeah, it's the system tool LAN administrators use to send alerts, some idiot figured out that the internet can pass messages to this little program, which will come into focus on your screen with incredibly useless spam. Just remove it can be happy as GMAN described. In addition, if you wan't to keep KaZaA with out the popups, hit CTRL-ALT-DEL to bring up the taskmanger, win9x users must be careful to not hit that key combo again. End the processes called GTWATCH.EXE and SAVE.EXE. This will stop KaZaA from recording what you do online, then spamming you with ads they feel reflect your tastes. Uninstalling KaZaA doesn't uninstall GTWATCH.EXE . . . after all, why stop pimping your eyes for money after you stop raping their bandwidth . . . everyone should have stayed with the Gnutella clients . . . they didn't have this crap till KaZaA started it.

I use an excellent program called Crazy Browser. It blocks ALL pop ups, and puts any new windows you open up as tabs at the top of IE. It is super handy, takes up one space on the Program Tray, so no need to switch back and forth - its all in the browser!

A good popup stopper is StopZilla. I use it and it blocks almost any popup, even the ones from kazaa.

And the best part is, none of these poor kids have a damn clue...then their dad goes to sit down at his compaq and he gets spam for DBZ episodes, hair removal, and swedish penis enlargement. And some idiots apparently BUY this ****, because the companies keep shelling out the effort to do it so it must be paying off somewhere....

And those lame spyware/scumware progs Kazaa carries...all the kids end up leaving them on and have no clue...lol

I mean...I feel bad...but if you are going to use Kazaa and steal stuff, then you deserve to be spammed...and moreover, the company you're stealing from deserves to try and recoup it's internet piracy-caused losses by shoving ads in your face even when you aren't at the computer or busy trying to do something.

So it's all relative. Scavengers...
