well, i have some ideas
1. make sure you have enought free harddisk.
2. can be the install thad is broken, try download it again from another mirroe
3. Can be your HL try reinstall it.
4. if all this fails, take your computer drop it into the trashcan and go buy a new.
5. if you dont have the money get you lazy bum a job and earn money for a new computer.

Aye, I have 46 gigs left in my machine and I get the same error. its incredibly annoying. My computer was obtained at christmas time and i havn't had any problems with it. So obviously its not any of those.
Lets try reinstalling HL.. if no luck then what would be the next option?

Note: When you get the Hl.exe/esf/autoexec.cfg.. i looked into the folder only to see that Hl.exe is not a folder at all, but the game itself. you cant have the game be a folder to Esf can you?

At the installation of ESF, you need to specify your half-life folder. So that would be (standard): "c:\sierra\half-life\"
In that folder, the hl.exe resides.
