melee combos

hi, i have been playing for a while now, but i noticed when some people who are really good do melee they do 'actual' combos, and they like go around and kick me in the head and ****, like i always have a decent record without knowing this, but how do u do it, like a real combo, where they like do a bazillion punches, and ****. i read the manual says nothing about like a down down down left combo thing, any help

how do we know how MANY directions to use in a combo?
is there a set amount? or does it vary?

the prob is that if the combo's arent known, no noobies will wanna play bcause all the oldschoolers will rape them every time.... at least the combo's would HELP
