If you're having client.dll problems, chances are you don't have the fmod.dll file, or it's an outdated version. Check the forums for a place to download this file, and it's a relatively small file, so it shouldn't take you too long to download.

you have esf 1.0?
If that isn't a typo you need esf beta 1.2 to work online properly.

you need beta 1.2.1 to fix that - do you have that version?

Download the fmod.dll file (It's under 1MB, so you'll be OK on that), and make sure it's in your Half-Life directory
  • If Steam
    • Go to your Steam Directory.
    • Go to SteamApps inside that directory.
    • Open the folder that has your email address as it's name.
    • Go to Half-Life, and paste the fmod.dll file in there.
  • If WON
    • Go to your Half-Life Directory, most common place is C:\Program Files\Sierra\Half-Life
    • Paste your fmod.dll file in that directory.
Hopefully this will fix your problem.
