Steam Offline?

Ok to get steam offline your supposed to start steam without an internet connection (my dad brings our RoadRunner Box to work) and my bro and I wanna play LAN. I start steam and i click the "start steam in offline mode" and then it says cannot complete this operation while offline...WTF?! isn't steam offline....error log : Error: Steam error: SteamMountFilesystem(4294062035,3,0x276fbe0=,0x276fcf0) failed with error 201: Cannot perform this operation while offline

lol steam neads to update the HL engine to suport offline play and you mussnt log out on exit just close steam

How do i update my HL engine? and i always just quit

Srry i'm impatient but my dad takes my road runner box soon can i get an answer quick?....how do i update my HL engine?

its automaticly just rightclick on the steam icon next to the clock (dont know how else to tell you) and choose monitor there you should see the progress

no games are updating or have been updated in the last day..
