Best 2D Fighting Series

Ok ladies and gents, vote your soul. What is the best 2 demensional Fighting series out there.

In your post please give specific reasons, and your favorite character from that series.

Ill start off with the Guilty Gear Series: for super fast paced strategy fighting. My favorite characters are Venom "fights with a pool cue, whats better than that", and Testament "for sheer bad ***edness"!

yep guilty gear, my potemkin and baiken are awesome, this game takes a lot of skill, its fast paced, and it has the most original characters ever. street fhighter comes a close second though, just because its awesome.

Tied between Guilty Gear and Streetfighter for me.

I'm gonna burn every single one of you who thinks Street Fighter is better than Mortal Kombat ;/

Out of the choices... I pick Street Fighter. But, I'm also a big fan of Marvel vs Capcom.

Mortal Kombat. Man, do I have memories from that game...

but my fav is Street Fighter

hey you can create your own fighters with that powerful engine it even has one original character Kung fu man!
mugen is a series it had different updated versions
well all other 2d fighting games are far behind it mugen.but guilty gear is the best one from listed above.
you should have listed the capcom vs xxx series.yeah its a own series even if all the games dont look really similar.

I always have been a die-hard King of Fighters fan, but lately SNK has been pulling out less than stellar efforts.

Guilty Gear on the other hand has only been getting better. And though it pains me to say it, I'd say its surpassed the greatness that is King Of Fighters '98.

So ya, GG is the king now. So everyone bow down and worship it (but i'll never forget about you KOF '98!).

Oh ya! And my fav GG character is Jam, she owns all!

Tied between KOF and Street Fighter.

Been following both Garou and Street Fighter since their first incarnation at the arcades and have enjoyed them ever since (with the exception of MVC2 and Street Fighter The Movie Game).

KOF has far better character design (e.g. not every 3rd character is someone in a karate gi) but loses out because the games lack innovation such as the parrying, kara throws, negative edge and the like found in the Street Fighter 3 series.
