Do you have a new system that you would like to show off to people around the world? Do you want to see what your new screamin' machine can do? Would you just like to test your computer for all it's worth? Then a benchmark is for you.
What is a 'benchmark'?
A benchmark is a program that tests your computer's hardware capabilities and then gives you a score based on how well your computer did. Then you can upload it and compare it against other people's scores. It can be incredibly fun or incredibly boring depending on your outtake of it.
What type of benchmarks are there?
There are several different kinds. They can range from testing parts of your computer, to testing the whole darned thing at once! 3DMark01, for example, tests pretty much your whole computer throughout the tests, while 3DMark03 tests mainly your video card.
So the question is, which benchmark suites your needs? Generally, I use 3DMark01, 3DMark03, and AquaMark3 for my benchmarking needs. They're very good tools for showing you how fast your system is going to be, and they even have a database so you can see where your system lies in comparison to everyone else's!
WHERE CAN I GET THEM?? D: D:
Google them, idiot. Nah, just kidding. I'll post some for you:
AquaMark
Good all around system benchmarker, it uses a combination of all the current DirectXs.
3DMark01
Also a good all around system benchmarker, but it uses a combination of DX (DirectX) 7 and 8. This one is mainly CPU/RAM dependant.
3DMark03
This is mainly associated with video cards as 90% of the test is based on your video card. Very good for stability testing on you video card.
3DMark05
This is basically 3DMark03's big brother. While not quite as dependant on the video card as it's predecessor, it's still very reliant on video cards for the majority of the scoring.
PCMark04
I don't use this much ( if at all ), but it will stress your processor and RAM I believe.
SiSoft Sandra
This is a very good program that can benchmark certain parts of your computer of your choosing. It also can give very detailed information about your computer.
Prime95
This program is used by overclockers to test if their CPU is stable or not. If your CPU can run it for 24 hours, then it's perfectly stable.

After you've run some of these, post your scores! Here's mine:
