hmm... what's ur currebt system now , i recomend for the gfx card a 6600gt from asus or gainward , if ur an ATI fan boy thou , just amek sure you get a gecube card , get a sapphire card , you mite wanna cut down a little bit on those speakers , tft are a waste of time , get a 17 or 19inch flat crt screen , if i where you i would be going to a pc-ie chipset , you'll have to get a 915 series chipset if you plan to continue using normal ddr memory , and ddr2 has made no real difference yet , has for ur chip , get a p4 280 (3ghz , 1mb cahce) but if i were you i would go get a venice core 3200+ along with an amd board , save ur money a bit , on stock voltage and cooling along with a good amd board , the chip got to 2.8ghz , plus the new a64 cores support sse3 instuctions now (thou at the cost of some transistors , but the overclock will give you some good performance :)) socket 478 will be pwned to hell soon enough

but use the same money and get a pc-ie setup on an nfroce4 Board & an athlon64 chip with a 6600gt (leadtek px6600Tdh extreme model or a gainward 1960ultra powerpack)

you'll be futured proofed this way aswell :)

plus the memory , if u can cut back on something else , get some ocz/corsair/Geil Low latency memory

Well, no... and yes. You can play any game out there if you set the details down and such. The 9600XT, while it was a great deal in its time, is nothing nowadays. The minimum you'd want to go is a 6600 plain, which will probably ~ a 9800. Also, a TFT (or LCD as I will now refer to it as), is what I'd definitely recommend, as you've already got planned. I'll go ahead and customize a system for you which I'm sure you'd be much happier with than that =).

CPU - http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=19-103-501&depa=0 - $146.00

Mouse - http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=26-104-151&depa=0 - $35.00
Keyboard - http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=23-175-101&depa=0 - $43.00
Monitor - http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=24-198-001&depa=0 - $225.00

Total - $1211.97 Before Tax
Ehhh, a little pricey but still very worth it. I didn't skimp on any of the peripherals, so you can probably lower the price down some. Also, if you want lower sound quality for cheap, just don't get the Audigy 2 and use the integrated solution, although it'll use up some CPU cycles. And the case is really overpriced, but it's an awesome looking case for LAN parties and such. Just an idea. I didn't include a CD-RW or DVD drive, because I'm assuming you'll use your old one. This would be a very good computer capable of handling anything out today, I believe.

I recommended an AMD solution because you're looking into gaming, and everyone knows that the 64 platform is the best for gaming due to its integrated memory controller D:.

Intel does not "sux". If you're going for multitasking and the such, Intel dominates there.

They are equally good, its just you prefer AMD, not saying Intel sucks, because Intel is owning AMD is media processing, etc.

Take the setup Smith recommended, you can easily overclock a A64 3000 into a 3500.

Also Intel isnt for the gamer, but more for people who use photoshop, video encoding(goes ALOT faster on intel).

It will be different if you're playing a CPU intensive game, such as HL2 or Doom 3. If you're only going to be playing Half-Life 1 mods, then you won't notice a thing.

and if i play hl2 and doom3 would that be laggy or maybe not going at 100fps 24/7 as an amd might have had?

Well, you won't be dropping 40-50 fps, but it would be slightly noticable. Your lowest fps on the AMD would probably be 2-10 fps lower on the Intel, etc, etc. But, you'll still be very happy with either choice. I'd still recommend the AMD for gaming, though.

You won't be getting 100 FPS constant with either choice :p. I get as low as 30 in some games, albeit for a second or two ;).
