I can only guess that folks here have likely seen this, but in case you haven't, this is a beautiful video by Youtube member Philhellenes, a magnificently intelligent man of science. I'm not usually one to post videos I didn't make, so consider that this is something truly special.
Never have I heard someone take the hard, cold exterior of high science and use it to show just how amazing our Universe is, and how amazing we are by extension.
Since I publicly denounced my religion here, I'll admit uncertainties and backsliding that crossed my mind. For those who were never religious, to believe that what a religion says is the truth invites tremendous fear in us. The term "God-fearing" might not be literal to most people, but I can confirm that for myself, my entire Christian life was spent gradually gaining the knowledge that I'm not, and never could desire to be, the perfect or even acceptable Christian in the eyes of a perfect being.
Death and God have been a source of subtle inner terror for me, because I believed he listened to my every thought, and that if I were to die then and there, I was to suffer forever.
Let me tell you, that is not a fear you can easily shake. You're accustomed to the presence of this all-knowing thing judging you.
This video, and this man, showed me why I needn't be afraid anymore, that the great watcher I felt was in fact ME, my conscience judging me according to my own set of morals. This knowledge, that what I believed was right would be reflected in the subconscious thing I had once called God, has helped me overcome my fear, so I can rest knowing I will be policed by MY morality and MY values, and not some ancient standards set by primitive and superstitious people to tell me why there is only one right way to do things, however petty and pointless.
I hope this video is found interesting, at the very least.
